Pocket Puggle Myth - Part II

Search for "Pocket Puggle" will return hundreds of results. Web sites that claim to sell the "rare" dog and people who have decided they must have one. However, several attempts to explain where this name comes from.

1 Runt of the Litter - Just a little on the unhealthy runt, who happens to be smaller than the other puggles and not for minor parents, but only through natural selection. I've always felt that it was what people were referring to when discussing "pocket puggles. " However, there are two options that could be a pocket puggle.

2 Pug / Rat Terrier Mix - It is obvious that this crisis does not equal Puggle, but that does not stop farmers from selling them as such. Although this cross does not result in a puppy that looks like little puggle, it's not and you should be skeptical of any breeder who tries to sell this mix for you as a "Pocket Puggle ".

3 Olde English Beagle / Pug mix - Olde English Beagle was at one time a legitimate breed Beagle. It's history dates back to 15th century, but only became well known through the Queen Elizabeth I. The Queen has gained a strong admiration for these miniature Beagles that is referred to as "glove" or "Pocket" Beagles. These Beagles to 9 inches tall were so small it can fit in a saddle bag or pocket. Standards for these dogs was written in the early 1900's, but the breed extinct. Modern breeders have attempted to create this standard, but not successfully re-create the accepted standard today.

I hope this article serves to further educate Puggle Puggle owners and potential owners. It is often difficult to obtain accurate data, so I tried to do the research for you and put together in an easy to read, easy to understand format. This type of information would you be better prepared for talks with farmers and people who claim to be "real" Pocket Puggles.
